This month’s talk explores how machines become intelligent — and why the math behind it matters. We’ll look at how concepts like optimization, probability, linear algebra, and deep learning come together to form the foundation of modern AI, from neural networks to transformers like GPT. The session will connect hardware to intelligence, showing how elegant mathematics powers today’s breakthroughs. No advanced background required — concepts will be paired with visuals and simple explanations.

About Our Speaker
Hussien Ali Ballouk Hernandez is a PhD researcher in condensed matter physics at UVic, specializing in nanotechnology, electron microscopy, and computational modelling. His work combines physics and AI to push the boundaries of imaging and material science. Beyond academia, Hussien co-founded AI-driven startups and creates science content in Spanish, blending technical expertise with a passion for making complex ideas accessible.
